Ok, so you just got your brand new Canon PowerShot G11 and you realized that you still need to get a memory card…but which one? SD? SDHC? MMC? In this post I’ll answer all your questions about the different types of memory cards for the G11.
If you’d like to skip straight to my memory card recommendation for the Canon PowerShot G11, click here.
Canon PowerShot G11 Memory Card Types
- SD Memory Cards
- SDHC Memory Cards
- MMC Memory Cards
SD cards can hold up to 4GB worth of images and video.
SDHC cards can hold up to 32GB worth of images and video.
MMC cards are 1st generation SD cards. I wouldn’t recommend getting an MMC card as they are nearing the end of their life. SD cards are the way to go, if you plan on using them in newer digital cameras.
Image Capacity on the Canon G11
- A 4GB SD card will give you approximately 1,498 photos using the Fine image quality setting.
- A 16GB SDHC card will give you approximately 5,992 images using the Fine image quality setting.
- A 32GB SDHC card will give you approximately 11,984 images using the Fine image quality setting.
Video Capacity on the Canon G11
- A 4GB SDHC card will give you approximately 45 min of 640×480 video.
- A 16GB SDHC card will give you approximately 180 min of 640×480 video.
- A 32GB SDHC card will give you approximately 360 min of 640×480 video.
The best memory card for the Canon G11 based on both price and performance is the Transcend 16GB SDHC class 6 memory card. This memory card is great for everyday photos and videos, while giving you the performance needed for shooting in RAW image format.
- It has a good amount of storage space allowing you to take roughly 5,992 photos or 180 minutes of video using the highest quality settings on the PowerShot G11.

What about the Class 10 chip over the Class 6?
Hi,
Glad to stumble upon this and read the 16 gig Transcend Class 6 SDHC card was the best, because that is the one I have! Can you tell me how many RAW images will this card hold if taken with the G11? Thanks!
Christy,
You can get about 1080 RAW images on a 16GB card…happy shooting!

Help how do I shoot a video with my canon G11? Do I go to menu? HELP!
Sharon,
Rotate the mode dial (on top of the camera) to the ‘Movie’ icon. Press the shutter button to begin recording and press it again to stop recording. You can read more about it on page 32 of the G11 manual. Best of luck!
