Sony HX5V Battery Info

Howdy friends! I received a couple questions about the Sony HX5V battery and decided to answer them here for everyone to enjoy…

Sony HX5V Compatible Batteries

The HX5V is designed to work with Sony branded NP-BG1 and NP-FG1 lithium ion battery packs.

So what’s the difference between the NP-BG1 and the NP-FG1 batteries? Well, the NP-FG1 allows the Sony HX5V to display minutes next to the battery remaining icon.

Those of you who are wondering, the Cyber-shot HX5V is not compatible with AA’s batteries.

Charging the Sony HX5V battery

  • It takes approximately 4 hours 30 minutes for a Normal charge.
  • It takes approximately 5 hours 30 minutes for a Full charge.

In order to get a Full charge, you need to leave the battery in the charger an hour AFTER the charging light has turned off. You can read more about this on page 13 of the Sony HX5V instruction manual.

How many photos and videos can you take on a single charge?

  • You can take roughly 300 images on a full charge
  • You can take roughly 2 hours (120 minutes) of video on a full charge

If you’re taking photos AND video, your totals will be lower than what you see listed above. Using flash and viewing images/video on your LCD screen will also limit your shooting time.

Should you get a backup battery for the Sony HX5V?

I highly recommend purchasing at least 1 extra backup battery pack, especially if you plan on traveling with the HX5V.

Under normal shooting situations, the NP-BG1 will last you most of the day, however, if you’re sightseeing or taking lots of video with your family then you’ll run out of power very quickly. The last thing you’ll want to do on vacation is wait 5 hours for the battery to charge before you can go back out and take more photos. In situations where you need more power you’ll have to locate a specialized photography/electronics store which can be hard to come by especially in remote locations.

Hope that answers some of your questions about the Sony HX5V battery.

Happy Shooting!
