I have a Nikon P100 and I have a couple pics on the internal memory that I need to download. I was thinking that there was a separate cord other than the charging cord to download pics. Am I right? When I tried to download the pics. with the charging cord it wouldn’t let me. I cannot find another cord if there was one..must have lost it moving if so.
Love my coolpix p100, but all of the sudden my pictures are coming out blurry. Anyone have any advice?? My son is graduating in two weeks and would like to have this problem fixed by then. Please help!
I have a Nikon P100 – want to take a GREAT shot of the SuperMoon coming up this weekend – anyone have any tips for me to create an outstanding photos?
i would like to know if it is possible to conect the coolpix p100 to a computer and view the image as i take it or immeadiately sfter it is taken
i guess a better question can i see it on the computer as i am seeing the image on my led screen on the back of the camera
No.
Like Shannon I would love someone to explain how to achieve photo’s like your Samples!
I would like to move off the Auto mode, but however much time I spend looking at the manual I cannot achieve photo’s I am happy with.
My landscapes look pale, my portraits often blurry.
I have managed to get some ‘good’ photos of my grandchildren using the sport mode, but don’t think that is the proper way to achieve these!
Any tips would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
I agree! I would like rot know the settings that are used to achieve such great pictures. Details please! I am especially interested in birds and other wildlife.
Thank you!
i just wish someone could give me tips on how to take a good clear sharp well lit ebay photo…and pretend im like a fifth grader…cause i am clueless.
I have taken pix from different events and would like to download to my Mac by pix numbers; ie: 249 through 370, 371 through 524. It seems I can only do this in one big file. How canI break the pix up in groups?
Thanks,
Joze
Took a1-to-1 at the Apple store and I now know what do to. Thought it was a Nikon issue but it is really a Mac one.

I bought my camera on ebay with no manual. I’m tring to upload pics from the internal memory (no memory card). Each time my computer starts to retrieve the pics. Mt computer shuts down and reboots. This happened on my home computer as well as on a different computer, so the problem is not my pc. If anyone can tell my how to fix the problem, I’d greatly appreciate it.
my coolpix s1 wont read the memory card. It just shows the last pic i took. I know there are about 150 pics in there some where but i cant get them. Any ideas on how to retrieve them.
I am doing a photography shoot with a green screen, black backdrop and white backdrop…. what are the best settings for photographing portraits? I will also have three diffuser lights that are 2500 watt. Thanks!
Could somebody in simple English explain what I have to do with my Coolpix P100 in order that I can take a photograph of something and “create” a blurry background.
In simplest terms, zoom in on the object, or move in very close to it. Also (this is very important), set your aperture to the smallest f-number that is tolerable for the lighting conditions.
Do a web search on “shallow depth of field”.
i know its been a few months, but in case anyone else has the same question, be sure to have macro on
tôi mới mua máy ảnh P100 nên chưa biết sử dụng chế độ quay video của máy. Tôi muốn mọi người hướng dẫn giúp tôi
Greetings!
Would like to know if there is some indicator in p100 to know what focal length you are using “while taking a snap”.
There is a bar at the top which stretch from one end to the other as you zoom in. But I am looking for any number that tells the focal length.
I am not referring to the metadata available with various photo editing soft wares that gives this information after the snap is taken and transferred to the computer.
Is there any way to transfer pictures back onto the P100 from the computer. I am going to a friends place for a party and this seems the easiest way to share some pics I have taken recently. Thanks in advance.
have p100 manual. very poorly designed. incomprehensible to decipher. plz advise
Hello DC:
This reply could be too late though! I don’t think there is a way.
Also its too risky even if you could get the pics copied to the memory card – using a card reader etc.
Using it in the camera back again could possibly conflict with the camera’s numbering / naming system.
It should also confuse The transfer – Soft ware.
I have not tried this so far. Not worth taking the chance.

Hi FB:
Agree with you in general. These manuals are written by Engineers and not by photography tutors. Often for a lay man it takes time to decode them.
Suggest you take it to someone who had been using this camera model for quite some time and then note down in your own words how to get the result as you would want it.
I guess you will end up with your own version of the manual which is only a quarter in size compared to the original and lot more practical for you – and most of all you don’t have to “decipher” it again.

You could just email them to yourself.
An audio problem has developed with my Nikon Coolpix p100. A random rattling background sound is now showing up when I film a movie. I first noticed the problem after filming in a very quite indoor setting. I am very disappointed with the audio performance of the camera. The audio problem has changed from random to frequent.
I have tried 7 tried and cannot get the background to blur in a picture…have read other post and followed your directions but its not working ((well i dont know where to change the shutter speed at))
Also i couldnt get a picture of my christmas tree that was in the dark with the tree lights..it would take the picture but everything would be bright like the lights in the house were on but it wasnt, make sense?
Thanks for any help u can give!
How do you put the nikon p100 in macro mode? I want to get really sharp focused pictures with the blurry background ! help please.
Refer to the multi-selector (round button on back of the camera). Push the bottom selection. This will get you into the focus menu, then select the “flower”.
although camera connection is shown by the computer no files in the camera can be accessed in the computer nor can they be transfered from camera to computer. i have tried using windows camera wizard but it says that” some other program is using the camera”.
i also downloaded the latest drivers for the camera but they don’t help at all.
Hi NBS!
Have you tried using the Nikon’s software (Nikon Transfer) that was included in the tiny CD that along with the cam when you bought it?
In that there is an option to auto detect your cam when it is connected to the PC.
For me every time i hook the cam to the PC, Viola! it automatically copied the newly added pictures to a separate sub folder inside the directory you specify. And that’s excellent.

is there a place the Flint, MI area that i can take some classes on how to use my Nikon Coolpix P100 camera??? Since i have switched to this camera, I have not been able to take even a simple picture. I know my settings are off, but even after reviewing the manaul, i have no idea how to set them so that i can just take pix of my friends and family. i have it set on P for programmed auto, but when i push the button to take a picture, it clicks 3 times and my photo is blurry???? Can anyone help????
Hello Friends I ve a P100 and use it for the job (we take pictures of tourists on a swimming pool) I’ve found that that my best option is USER SETTINGS where i put the measuring, focus, burst mode and all other stuff, the problem is that every time I turn off (sometimes even without removing battery) the camera forgets these setting and I need to reconfigure each and every use. Camera even forgets the date/time. Is there any firmware update that fixes this? Is this a normal behavior? Do i have a damaged camera?
Best Regards

I take a lot of wrestlign pictures and only half of them turn out ok, the other half are VERY blurry, how can I get great pictures all the time?
My Nikon p100 wont let me view my pictures on the camera or when I put it on the computer. It just says file can not be displayed. I’ve tried adjusting settings and absolutely nothing works… I need to know what to do to fix it.
The camera won’t allow viewing of pictures (on the camera display) during transfer. You can view the files on your PC only.
Not during the transfer… it wont show up on the computer AFTER I try to transfer them and they won’t show up on the display either.
I have a Nikon P100. How do you get photos off of the internal memory?? Please help. When I got the camera as a gift, the manual was in Spanish only.
You can use the USB interface. Also, the English manual is available on this website.
how can i make the object out of focus
I can not get it to blur the background, can you tell me what the setting should be set at….I called the store where I bought it and they told me that if I go into the manual mode, that i can change the F-stop to a very low number, well the lowest number is 2.8…is there a way to make it lower???? I sure hope you know..
thanks, Kim
You are referring to “shallow-depth-of-field”, which is very easy to accomplish with the P100. Yes, go to f2.8, then either zoom in on the object, or move close in and use macro mode. You may need to increase shutter speed depending on the lighting situation. Also, consider using a tripod. Set the hands free timer mode to eliminate hand shake when using the trigger button.
Also, 2.8 might not be the correct aperture. You are correct…in general, it will be the lowest f-stop for the desired effect.

I want to know what settings to use to get the best quality pictures when taking pictures at a basketball game. can you help
In Manual mode, you can use higher shutter speeds will allow you to reduce motion blur during the basketball action. However, you will likely need to increase aperture (lower f- number) to allow more light to reach the camera’s sensor.
Plan on experimenting with your camera ahead of time. It’s a good way to learn exposure settings without having to fuss with the camera when you really need to be concentrating on the photography.
I have a P100 and used it to make a recording of some really noisy frogs but the photo is rubbish. Is it possible to use just the recording without the photo ie copy just the voice memo. I’m making a slideshow and would like to include it. I’ve use Nikon transfer to download it to my computer so I can here it but not use it. Frustrating!
Yes. However, the ability to use the audio will be a function of the editor you are using. I don’t beleive MovieMaker can ingest the camera’s mov files. You’ll need to find one that can. If you want something quick and cheap (as in free), there are some good demo products available online (try AVS video).
Thanks for your advice. Problem sorted – I have Nero Vision Extra installed and that will open the wav file.
Hey there, I have had nikon p10o for a while but I still dont know how to use manual mode, can you help mi with some tips or link
anyway tnx
If you are using one of the manual modes, then it will necessary to set shutter and / or aperture. With the camera in Auto, make sure the DISP mode is enabled, then you can use the settings displayed as a guide when operating in a manual mode.
I lost my quick start manual for my Nikon P100 Coolpix camera, Can you tell me how to set up the BSS mode? Someone changed my settings and I can’t figure out how to get back to that. Thanks.
Sure…it’s under the “Continuous” shooting menu.
Hi,
I bought nikon p100 couple weeks ago, everything is ok with the camera, except the image of moving object is not good,I mean it seems it doesnt have cybershot like feature.Am I right?Or something is wrong in settings?
Can you guys give me some tit bit about using this camera, actually its my first camera.I want to learn photography, will buy a DSLR after using this one.
Thanks in advance
In manual mode, increase your shutter speed. You’ll need to decrease aperture (lower F number) to account for loss of light. If possible, place the camera on a tripod, and use the timer mode to eliminate shake from your hands operating the trigger.
Hi Moose,
I can’t even figure out how to turn the camera to video mode. Can you help me? Thanks
I took some indoor daytime photos today and they’re all blurring (can make objects out but they’re fuzzy). The evening shots I took last weekend looked great. Can you tell me what the best ‘basic’ settings should be on the p100? I’m wondering if my settings are off.
Thanks!!!!
Hi, I have a problem with the p100 screen. Pictures are not the same when viewed on PC. They come out perfect on the screen but are really dark on the computer. If anyone can help it would be really great, this is doing my head in as no one else has been able to help.
cheers
Arround 6 months back I bought a P100 camera. When the camera is ON, and camera is moved, I feel like the lens inside are also shaking. Is it normal or a problem?
I went to the show room to check the same with new camera, but the P100 is no more on the stands. In P500, the lens is rigid at what ever the position it is zoomed.
Somebody plz answer me at the earliest as the camera warranty expires in Dec 2011.
Thanks
hello there,
my sister bought me for my bday a coloursplash flash (lomography) to add on a camera with a hot shoe. Since my Nikon P100 doesn’t have a hot shoe I wondered if there’s another solution to this, besides buying another camera with a hot shoe?
Great forum!

I am having a hard time trying to get a macro picture. I tried “auto” with macro on, A,S,P. In A,S,P I am getting a grid on viewfinder, left side. How should I set my camera for an insect subject macro picture?
Thanks.
Hi again Moose,
Can I use Pause option while taking Video with Nikon P100?
Hello Moose,
I bought a Nikon Coolpix P100 few days back. I just want to know something about it:-
1. How to take Photo with Foreground & Background clear (not blur background). Please tell me the setting of Shutter Speed and Aperture Value.
2. Why in HS video recording Optical/Digital zoom facility is not available.
3. How to use 240 fps function in movie & how they play.
4. Can I make a CD/DVD movie with P100′s video recording?
Regards,
Raju

Yes you can make a CD/DVD movie with P100′s video recording. I import the video recording into a movie making program that I have. Some programs have it set up with multiple tracks so you can overlay a still photo over a movie clip etc. Also some programs have very good editing features so you can adjust the color, sound etc.
Wow, I am soooo glad I found this awesome site. I got my P100 last Christmas (I just stopped pouting about not getting a DSLR) and it takes great P& S shots but I am ready to move on to manual and create those cool photos with the blurry backgrounds. I’m bookmarking this site to come back to in the morning when I’m not so tired. Thanks can’t wait to dive in and learn some new stuff for my Christmas card photos!
what do you set the settings to to make the background blury???? if you know, please share…
thanks, Kim
I recently purchased the P500 to take pics of my sons football games. How do I get a good action pic without the blur? Everytime I snap, anyone moving is a blur. I tried taking pics in shutter priority mode and although he isn’t blurry, the pics are dark. What do I do?
Hi,
I’m having trouble with blur when I’m not using the flash. Do I have to use manual mode to correct this issue? If so what is a normal shutter speed and aperture for indoor, outdoor, etc? Having some trouble with adjusting those setting. Someone please help the uneducated!
Thanks,
Alyssa
Hi, I am trying to use the Interval timer shooting option, however when I follow the instructions in the continuous shooting menu when I scroll down it gets to BSS then goes to the top missing out Multi Shot16 and Intvl timer shooting. What am I doing wrong.
This is the same in P,S,A and M modes.
Thanks
Ok sorted reset the camera and everything is now working!
I am not sure how to do much, if anything with my camera. I want to be able to take all kinds of different pictures, but I can’t figure out how to set things right.
With a P100, what settings would I need it on for gig photography? Also, everything outside of Auto mode comes out unnecessarily dark even in a natural light setting – what could be wrong?
If you are using one of the manual modes, then it will necessary to set shutter and / or aperture. With the camera in Auto, make sure the DISP mode is enabled, then you can use the settings displayed as a guide when operating in a manual mode.
Hi.
Every time I want to take a quick picture I come across the problem in the slowness of the shot. I was taking pictures in motion, for example of a downhill skateboarder, or handrail. All photos are blurry in some parts of the body of the object in focus. How to solve this? What better setting for this type of photo? The environment is open, and it parks on sunny days. Thank you, Rafael.
Go to Manual mode and increase your shutter speed (this helps with motion blur), then increase your aperture until the exposure is corrected.
Try using sports option. If not then keep the cam in shutter priority and set to its highest value i.e.1/1500 or higher if available.
Hope this solve ur problems.
I’m going to buy a P100, i think the camera is worth buying comparing the features it provides with its price. Can you please tell me, how do I check the originality of that camera? I think Made in Japan is the original one. Is there any other way so I get rid myself off buying fake and low quality camera?
Dear Shanon,
Since Nikon no longer make the P100 because of a newer version the P500,you will need to buy a used one. Check out this web site, this is where I bought my P100. They sell original items,no fakes.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ Have a nice day.
P500 is cheaper than the price that was for new P100.
I have been trying to take photos and night time and everytime I do its like it takes two photos really slowly and puts them together and it comes out blurry everytime. I was wondering what setting to use for night shots.
Im a new user of the P100 and cant figure out how to transfer pictures from carera to my computer.
Hi,
Recently in one of the wedding I attended, I took photos with my NIKON p100 camera. In the indoor, all the photos i have taken are shaky and blurred. I dont know whats the mistake i am doing? Please help
Hi,
Recently I attened a wedding where I took photos with my NIKON p100 camera. In the indoor, whenn i take photos, i could feel the ‘shutter lag’ was very high. Could you please tell me how to avoid this?
It is because the shutter speed is set to a lower value. Even if it is on auto, if the lighting is either medium or poor. Just keep the cam still till the time monitor shows a pic or better use flash.
Hi,
Recently I went to beach along with my family .I took photos with my recently bought nikon p100 camera .The sun light was too bright and hence in the photos taken near the seashore , the sea is not at all visible. Only my family members are visible and the bacakground sea water is not visible in the sea becase of the over exposure. What should I have changed in the settings?
Hi,
In your sample photos you have mentioned about wide angle/telephoto and macro – could you please tell me where these settings are available in p100 camera?
Good Day,
Now that the Nikon P500 is out,do you think it is a good idea to exchange my P100 for this one?
I am going to answer my own question. According to some photo web sites, the Nikon P500 is a modest upgrade to the P100. There really is not much of a difference between the two cameras except the P500 has a 36X lense while the P100 has a 26X lense. Since there is not much difference between the two I will stick to my P100!
Hi,
I have taken few snaps and since i don’t have memory card,it is saved in camera memory itself. Now, i dont know how to upload the fotos in the laptop. Please help.
Want to take wedding pictures at a 2:00pm wedding. What setting are the best? also reception is being held inside what setting should I use?
just bought a nikon p100 and dont know what memory card to buy
Hi
I had the same problem, so i went to amazon and bought a sdhc 4gb extreme for about £8. this memory card makes a lot of difference because of the 20mb/s write speed.
My Nikon P100 flash stopped working after the warranty was up. I have tried several settings as well as read the manual. I have also looked online at other forums but was unable to see any other issues that match my concern for this model. I have a bought a new battery, reset the camera, updated the firmware, selected every setting to produce a flash and still there is no error message. Can you give me any suggestions?
The flash is defective, you will need to sent the camera to Nikon for a repair.
Hi,
I’m not very good at taking pictures and I’ve been struggling with my p100 since september, we’re in vietnam and the sun is very bright, my pictures are flooded with light and you can barely see them. Help me make good memories of my first Asian vacation!!!
I am not very knowledgeable – I want to set the camera so I can set up the camera for a group shot or shots for our family reunion and have a few seconds to get in the photo myself. How do I do that. I have a tripod that I can set up.
Hi glad I found this website. I’m a beginner in photography and I just got my p100. I want to know how do I take photos of night landscapes in nature.
I cannot get my XP to recognize the camera when trying to transfer photos. Nikon support sent an an updated software package (ViewNX 2.1.2) and said that should fix the problem but it did not.
Any suggestions? I am pulling my hair out!
you may need to disable your antivirus. My XP worked no problems. When you use the usb cable it should recognize it in short order. You can also take the compact flash card out and put into a card reader slot. If you do not have a card reader slot, you can purchase a USB multi-card reader at most places that sell electronic equipment(wal-mart, walgreens, best buy, etc).
I am using my Nikon P100 which I’ve had for about 6 months but one thing that frustrates me is that when I am in P, S, A, or M modes, even with the flash raised, it won’t let me change the flash settings. I hit the button and nothing comes up. Any suggestions? Is it something wrong with the camera?
Seconds after posting this it started working again – maybe it’s that the flash has to be up before you turn the camera on?
I have just bought a p100 and manual focasing is really troubling me.what does the manual focasing do in manual mode?
Actually, autofocus works quite well on the P100. I think you will be more frustrated with its manual focus mode.
Can you be more specific about what you are having trouble focusing on?
hey, i want to know if external lense can be attached to nikon p100! if yes then which ones and where do i buy them! pls help..
Nothing available.
Hey,
I wanted to shoot continuously with interval timer without any battery discharge.
In the manual they said to charge with AC adapter but i cannot make up.
Please tell me how to charge and shoot simultaneously..
P.S : when i charge with AC adapter it gets charged but does not allowing me to shoot
thank you…
The camera will not operate with the EH-68P…it’s for charging only. You will need the EH-62A adapter.
hey so i have been taking videos with my P100 and i keep getting this grainy whooshing noise whenever im outside or inside. i mean inside its not to bad but out side is pretty bad. is there a way i can prevent this?
Turn off the wind reduction.
Hey, love the site. Helped me out soooo much :)
Quick Q. How do i focus on specific object when taking photos? Say im taking a photo of a bird in a tree, the camera will focus on the leaves and not the bird. Sorry for the silly question :)
Thanks
Ethan
Hey,
I got the p100 in December for christmas and I am still trying to get used to it. I was wanting to know how I can adjust the shutter and the aperture at the same time in the same mode so that I can get clearer, more focused photos???
I am only fifteen and am new to photography if you have anyoyher tips that would be great too! I love taking sunset photos outside and photos after it has just rained. :)
In Manual mode, use the multi-selector (rear lower right) right or left arrows to select either aperture or shutter (you can’t adjust both at the same time). Then use the command dial (rear upper right) to make your adjustment.
Also…use a tripod when possible. The camera’s time delay feature will allow photos to be taken without the influence of your hand pressing on the release causing movement of the camera.
Hi,
I purchased P100 4-5 months back, and am a beginner in photography. Im facing real trouble in taking sharp pictures. All the pictures appear dull and blurry. Indoor shots are a real disaster. The colors are dull, no contrast and the are far from being sharp. Another issue is with the night-mode..the only night mode i have been able to figure out is the one that takes 2 shots, and then combines them, but if there is even a slight movement between the 2 shots, the picture doesnt come out right. Does the camera offer any other night mode? or any tips on keeping the camera stable without a tripod.
If operating fully automatic, enable vibration reduction (to the standard default setting) and flash. Museum or Party/Indoor settings might be of value, too.
In general, I recommend experimenting in “manual” mode, but for beginners this can be intimidating. It will take patience, but in the long run, having control over the aperture, shutter speed and most importantly, lighting, will improve results and satisfaction.
Same issue with not beable to view HD video on laptop.
However I have tried using HDMI cable to my Sony bravia,LED TV, and the same thing its chopping or just flashes?
Why would this be? is this because the TV only acept HD from a cable signal?
Looking for help to view these video’s on TV
what do the P, S, A,M & U buttons stand for? and what do they do to make the image different?
P=Programmed Auto. Automatic everything, but gives manual control over aperture and shutter if desired.
S=Shutter Priority. Allows user to set shutter speed.
A=Aperture Priority. Allows user to set aperture.
Manual mode. Allows user to set aperture, shutter or both.
User Mode. Allows user to save settings from P,S,A or M modes.
Indeed, your pics will likely differ from P or full-auto where the camera adjusts for the conditions. The various “manual modes” allow for adjustment as you see fit.
I am using my P100 to take pictures of my grandsons baseball games. Some are in natural daylight while the late games under the lights. What are the best settings in these conditions? Should I use the M or S dial position? it appears the M lets me adjust the shutter and f settings whereas the S only lets me adjust the shutter setting.
Use M.
Higher shutter speeds will allow you to reduce motion blur during the action. However, this will likely force you to increase aperture (lower f- number) to allow more light to reach the camera’s sensor.
Plan on experimenting with your camera ahead of time. It’s a good way to learn exposure settings without having to fuss with the camera when you really need to be concentrating on the photography.
I took beautiful pictures not aware that the memory card was not in the camera. It still took pictures… how do I capture them to the memory card?? There was no message like “no memory card” . Please advise
The camera automatically recognizes when there is a memory card installed.
I have been asked for images of 300dpi – what setting do I need to put the camera on to get this?
Thanks
DPI refers to printer resolution. There is no setting in the camera for this.
Recently the display screen on my Coolpix 100 turns dark blue while using it. I turn it off and restart and every thing is back to normal till the next time it happens. Thanks, John
hey there, I just wanted to ask you with which feature do you think I could do great photos inside (in a church mainly). Because someone asked me to take a few shots at their wedding and I’m new with this camera but would like to take the best pictures possible. So can anyone help?
How you set up your camera depends most importantly on the lighting. Next consideration is how you wish to operate the camera, whether it’s with one of the auto-presets or in manual mode.
The “Scene” preset sub-menu can afford some success by selecting Museum or Party/Indoor, either with flash (depending on lighting).
I personally would consider Manual mode with high shutter speed, i.e., > 1/1000 and Aperture >F6.3 with flash. However, these settings, are really dependent on the ambient lighting. I’d prefer not to use flash, as it sort of lends an unnatural look (in my opinion). You may also want to place the camera in “steady mode”. Another consideration is the use of a tripod.
Experiment ahead of time…even inside your own home.
I want to add another point;
If you do not use flash, then you will need to lower the F number and shutter speed. The issue then becomes motion blur, and it is more likely you will need a tripod.
Moose is awesome. How do I set the P100 to wide angle?
I just bought Nikon p100 and i took a few pictures in the night and it tooks the picture twice. If i take the picture in the daylight it’s totally fine. Please help me to fix this issue
Okay so on amazon i found a fisheye lens FOR the nikon p100 how does that work for a “Bridge” camera like the nikon p100? does it put a lot of weight in the original lens? how does it attach? it doesnt say anything about an adapter? will it work?
I got this camera a week ago. I chose a picture as my welcome screen, the 1st couple of times I turned on the camera the pic. was normal, now it is blurry no matter what picture I choose. I don’t really care about a welcoming picture that much, but I ‘m more concerned that something might not be working properly inside the camera, any suggestions?
How do i clean my p100 i see it have sand what can i use
Thank you
Hey guys i want top share a website with all you photographers that i think you will enjoy! they have Camera lens mugs, and a lot of photography supplies!! they sell iphone camera lenses as well! the website is Photojojo.com go to the site and visit the store!!! its awesome!
…. and your welcome! :)
Hi i have a question, i am looking for filter adapters and i was wondering how those worked and does it effect the quality of your pictures and i found a fish eye lens on amazon.com but i dont understand how its going to go on the camera and what is the size of the lens like i guess the circumference because i might be looking for other filters down the road if i dont decide to get the adapter. do they make filters for the nikon coolpiz p100 because if they do i really need the link to a website that sells them and for the photog geeks out there go to Photojojo.com and go to the store the store button is at the top of the page! HAVE fun and please please please answer my question!!!!
Google Nikon, P100, wide angle, and filters. I saw a package with filters and a wide angle lens that fit on a tube that friction fits to the lens body. Not to the movable part. So the filters are in front of the moving lens inside the tube extension. The wide angle lens also attaches to this tube so it is either filter or wide angle not both. Sorry I do not remember the supplier.
Thanks for your web site, hopefully my question will be answered. What mode should I have the camera on while taking photo of moon. That is my question,God bless!
Howdy David,
Enable aperture priority mode (A on the mode dial) and select an aperture of f/8. When shooting at f/8 the shutter speed will drop considerably. To prevent any blur, you’ll have to mount your camera to a tripod and enable the self-timer to get your hands off the camera. Happy shooting!

I seem to be having trouble with my camera. It was working fine and now all of a sudden it doesn’t want to turn on, I was looking for a way to reset it but haven’t found one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Howdy Jessica,
I would give Nikon support a call (1-800-Nikon-US). Best of luck!

try to check your battery,
if battery is damaged, it won’t work.
change a battery and see if its working or not….
My wife recieved a P-100 as a gift and we have misplaced the charger cable that came with the camera.
Q- Can the battery be charged in camera using a USB connection to my computer?
Q- Does this take a “special” USB connector or can any old connector that fits the camera connection be used?
Great site!
Thanks
Howdy Ron,
1. Yes it can, just make sure the ‘Charge by computer’ option is set to auto. You can read more about it on page 168 of the P100 manual.
2. You’ll have to purchase a UC-E6 USB cord (see here).
Happy shooting!

Hi, I had a problem with the p100 screen. Pictures are not the same when viewed on PC. In p100 screen, pictures have more colors. In PC, pictures became dull. Any suggestions?
-malcolm
Howdy Malcom,
The LCD screen tends to saturate colors a bit more than what your computer monitor normally displays. You can turn up the saturation a bit in camera or when editing your images to get a bit more color.

So I just bought a P100 at BesBuy yesterday. Was on sale for a 100 off. I bought the camera because I take a lot of photos of my son. Ive gone through several point and shoots since his birth (last year) I figured since I take so many photos of him it would be best with a good camera. Having never dealt with a camera that has this many features I have no idea where to start at. My son is at the age where he is just starting to walk. What are the best settings for indoor pics to use?
Why did they not put an orientation sensor on the P100 for the quality of the camera that is the one thing that is missing.
Hello,
A soccer coach had me take pictures of the players practicing.
they practice at night under lights.
i took pictures of the boys passing and shooting but their legs come out blurry and the ball as well. i told him i would take more.
how can have a better quiality image? settings?
i need help. i can’t send him this poor images. he wants to post them on the web!
Im not the best at this either but from what ive read in photography books the best thing they say to do is focus on the objects moving (feet and ball) and if they are under lights i dont think there should be a problem with you speeding up the shutter speed a little. just experiment a little in manual mode and see what works best. hope this helps!
Under low light you can use Shutter at 1/40 & High Iso; if it’s too dark then you can drop to 1/1.
Hey,
thank you for this great site.
I am honestly feeling really disocuraged with P100. I never get to take “good” pictures. Its always pale. So i use the edit stuff on microsoft to fix the contrast and brightness.
When i read the manual, i feel like it doesnt really help because the pictures really dont have colors. I usually feel like i made in buyin this camera.
Please tell me how to take good quality of pictures…
thank you!
Howdy Mary,
“Good” photos start with great lighting. If most of your shots are indoors or in low light you’ll likely encounter a number of factors that will lead to subject blur, image noise and loss of color.
Without getting into technical details, most compact digital cameras come with image sensors that are much smaller than those found in Digital SLR’s. The size of an image sensor is different than the number of megapixels it can record. Image sensor size can greatly increase the look of your low light shots by reducing noise and retaining color at higher ISO’s.
If 90% of your shots are in low light situations, you might think about upgrading to an entry level DSLR.

Thank you for the reply :))
Do you have any recommendations for a tripod for the P100?
MOOSE !!!!! I have tried all night to successfully download and then share my video from Coolpix 100…….to no avail.
I have a PC not an apple.
I have even tried uploading them to U Tube….to no avail.
Please Please Please…….help !!!
Hope all is well with you in Montana….you lucky man you. Thank you, Rosemary Tracy
I have ordered a Coolpix P500 and assume that its 3 inch LCD display will be very similar to that of the P100.
I would like to know what tips people have for taking care of it.
What is the best screen protector ? Can you get an actual piece of glass or perspex to clip on or must you use those awkward and tricky-to-apply stickers ?
If I wanted to capture northern lights with my P 100 what setting would I need to put it on? Any suggestions? I must say I love my P 100
Hi Moose,
Great forum.
I think my P100 is great, however…
I’m having trouble with the audio.
Shortly after I received my camera for Christmas, I made 3 short HD movies with no problem. When I tried again today the audio play back sounded like wrinkling up newspaper.
I thought there might have been a problem downloading the movie to my new computer (different computer) so I tried playing the movie in the camera. The sound was just as bad playing it back through the cameras speaker/microphone. I also tried “Recording Voice Memos” – same sound problems.
I have plodded though the instruction book but found nothing to help. Has anyone else had similar problems? What do you think Moose?
Thanks, Tom
I’m having a problem with audio too. It sounds like ‘white sound’ -like a static background noise ( the filming was done indoors). I’ve come close to reducing the noice with a video computer program when editing the movie, but I am still not statisfied with the end result of the audio. The ‘white sound’ is very distacking if someone is speaking on the flimed recording. I read at one website to try to film closer (to get the microphone closer) and also use the wide angle. I’ll give that a try and see how the audio turns out.
Joan
I tried filming closer and that did not work.
I also tried to do what the manual advised to reduce ‘white noise’ by using the wind reduction for the microphone- that did not work at all!
Again I am filming inside our home. There is nothing inside that makes that sound- the house is quite.
So HELP from anyone on how to solve this audio problem!
Joan
i have my brand new P100 today, but suddenly after a few shots and use the ultra zoom a message pop up on my screen saying that my “Battery Exhausted”.
Please help me. Thanks
This is because the camera only comes partly charged. In order to preserve battery life, the manual advises to charge the camera for six hours first. You may now find that the battery runs out quickly – you can buy a replacement on eBay.
The golden rule with ALL electronics is to chuck them on charge WITHOUT turning them on the minute you get home. Otherwise the battery can be damaged. And always wait until your battery is completely flat to start charging – a battery seller told my aunty this and it has worked for all cameras and mobile phones I’ve used.
I have been using the P100 integrated intervalometer for fun lately but it is limited to 30 s minimum. I was wondering if there is any external intervalometer which could be used with the P100?
Thx for any feedback or recommendations
Did you figure this out? Why oh why did they limit it to 30s min? Seems a simple firmware update could fix this. Some Windows software for remote shutter release would be an option (for me) too! Anyone?
Hi Moose,
How can I take a picture with a blurry background and focus on the object only with Nikon P100. Tks
You are referring to depth of field (and want it reduced). To do that, go to manual mode, zoom in on the object from a distance, or get real close with the zoom set wide (consider macro mode for the latter, too) In both cases, have the aperture set as wide open as possible (smaller number) for the lighting situation (< f4)…You may need to tweek with the shutter speed, too.
Experiment with these until you get what you want.
Just wondering if you have to use the AC Adapter EH-68P or EH-68P (AR) when charging the camera from the wall. It’s rated output is 5.0 VDC, 500mA. This is the same as the USB spec for usb 2.0. What I was wondering is whether it would still be ok using say an Apple AC to usb adapter, 5.0 VDC, 1A. Same laptops can also output this and the manual says you can charge through a computer
Alright, I would just like to say thank you for making such a page for a helpless photographer like me. So i have two questions, one what does it mean when the screen turns purple sometimes.. I feel like I’m ruining my camera when that happens :( & secondly how do you set the picture timer to take pictures w/o your hands?
Im just getting to grips with my new P100, but I cant seem to make good use of the aperture priority. Even when I set to the smallest aperture I cant get a small enough depth of field. I have still got some great photos but its frustrating not getting the focus that I really want. Any tips?
I am shooting pictures in Auto mode; indoors and outdoors. It seems no matter what I do the picture quality is very poor. No sharpness, lots of noise and sometimes it seems no matter how still I hold the camera the picture could come out blurred.
What am I doing wrong? I am not shooting anything special, fast moving or long ranged!
Could you please let me know how to get the Grids on the screen which can help me in positioning my subject better when using “Rule of thirds” .
Thanks.
Push the DISP button on the right side of your viewfinder,. pushing it 3 times will cycle through the three display modes, on contain the “grid”
I just bought this camera what is the best way to get a picture of the moon.
Also my daughter plays hockey what would you recommend to get her pictures of her playing.
Geoff,
For moon shots…
- use a tripod
- enable the self-timer
- enable spot metering
- enable aperture priority (A) and select an aperture of f/8.
For hockey…
- enable continuous/burst mode
- enable auto ISO
- enable shutter priority (S) and select a shutter speed between 1/500 and 1/1000
Happy shooting!
- Moose
The sky is always blown in my pictures and I have to edit in photoshop to improve contrast too. What should I do to get best possible contrast and correct highlights.
Thanks,
Akshay
Hi Moose. Firstly, thanks for the web site. Very useful for newbies like me. I was lucky enough to get a new P100 for Christmas and as we live on a rural property, I’m keen to take advantage of the opportunities to shoot some pictures of our wildlife. The wildlife are not so keen and so won’t always sit still for me so quick and fast shooting often at long range is often required.
I notice you recommend shutter priority mode (S) on the mode dial and a shutter speed of 1/500 with Auto ISO enabled. Is this good for day time wildlife photography as well or is there a more appropriate setting? Thanks.
Howdy Simon,
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I’d use those settings anytime you’re shooting subjects with movement. In addition to those settings, try enabling burst mode. You’ll end up with a lot of throw-aways, but at the same time you’ll find a few keepers. Happy shooting!

I cannot view HD movies on my computer (XP Home) without breakup and sound skipping. My laptop (XP Pro) samer problem. My wifes HP notebook is a little better, but sound stops before the video. I have read your answers about a dedicated video card (not sure what this is, but will look into it). I wish to use a program like Windows Movie Maker and am wondering…should I just buy a new Mac?
Could you please recommend a good choice of hardware that will allow me to create movies (and burn them) to play on my Blue-Ray player?
Douglas,
Windows has problems playing back .MOV files. Most of the time it’s due to your video card. If your video card can’t playback HD video, you’ll encounter many of the issues you’re experiencing. Another common issue is the video player/software your using. Try downloading Splash lite and see if the video clears up. As for video editors, the new version of Windows Live Movie Maker does a good job reading and writing .MOV files.
- Moose
I had the same problem but i found the VLC media player and it worked very well, for me at least ^^
Douglas, I just got a new Nikon P100, upgraded from my old P80. I experienced the same jerky problems with the .MOV videos you are having (hopefully you have resolved them). I have two laptops, one is a Lenovo T61 and the other is a Toshiba Portege R700. When I played the raw .MOV video file in my T61 it played jerky, when I played the raw ,MOV in the Portege it played well. It seems I need to upgrade my video card in the T61.
My old P80 played the .AVI videos very nice in the T61, so I found this free software which converts .MOV files into .AVI files, I installed it in the T60, created the .AVI file from the .MOV file and played it in the T60 and it played smooth. I fixed the problem thanks to some of the responses on this Blog.
Got this for my husband for x-mas…all pics are blurry…is it a setting or the photographer?
Go into the menu and set the auto focus to continous. Bet yours is set for single.
If you use it in single shot you have to press the shutter half way down to have the camera focus. If you just press the shutter all the way down in one motion the picture will not be in focus.
in the manual check pages 30,38,and 93
Karen,
It really depends on the shooting situation. Generally speaking, it’s easier to capture great photos in bright light than it is in low light. I imagine the blurry pics you’re experiencing happen in low light situations with flash disabled.

Hi there
I want to take macro shots of botanical subjects to use as reference for drawing, so I want really good detail with soft natural side lighting. (I usually pick the flower, leaves, and then take the photo inside near a window)
Can you help me with the best settings to use.
thanks, Bridget
Bridget,
You’ll wan’t to get as much natural light on the subject as possible. Mount your P100 to a tripod and enable macro mode. Ensure your ISO is set to 100 and activate the self-timer so you can get your hands off the camera which will eliminate any chance of camera shake. Happy shooting!
- Moose
Hi,
thank you for your forum,
I got a p100 2 days back. when I shake the camera lightly i feel the lens is shaking and not tightly fixed to the camera body.
Is this something wrong with my cam, or is it normal?
thanks for your help.
tata
Tata,
I have noticed this as well. I believe Nikon created it this way to allow for some “play” since the zoom is controlled by an electronic switch and not a manual lens barrel. As long as you’re images are coming out sharp, then you should be fine.

Hi There,
I am a beginner with P100. I find it difficult to work in MACRO mode using P100 as compared to lower configuration cameras of CANON? Is that the fact or just my lack of knowledge?
Is there really a problem with P100 macro mode? If not, kindly gimme some tips on how to go about it?
Thanks for the help.
I have bought a new P100 and I wonder if it can take good pics of moving objects, if yes please let me know the settings, I couldnt find time to read the manual. I have tried taking a pic of my running fan and I found that the image is not still or sometimes blurred. but in L110 the image of ruuning fan looks as if it is still. is there any option via settings??
Arun,
Stopping fast motion indoors can be difficult with the P100. If your shooting indoors without flash, you’ll need to enable shutter priority (S) mode and select a shutter speed of 1/500 or higher. I would also enable Auto High ISO which can be found on page 84 of the P100 manual. To increase your chances, you can use continuous (burst) mode which can be found on page 86 of the manual. Burst mode will capture a series of images in quick succession. Hope that helps!

I just got a P100 and am looking for some advice on taking pictures with a limited field of view. I have tried using the aperture priority setting and adjusting the aperature size to all available sizes, but I’m not able to get only the subject to be in focus. I also tried zooming in and then adjusting the aperature to see if that work and still didn’t have any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Nathan,
A shallow depth of field is best achieved with a digital SLR. You can trick your P100 to create similar results, but it’s not as easy as adjusting the aperture.
To create a shallow depth of field with your P100, you’ll need some distance between the background and your subject…AND some distance between the subject and your camera. Imagine standing in an open field with trees around the perimeter. If you position your subject up against the trees, you won’t be able to achieve a shallow depth of field with your P100. Instead you would position your subject in the middle of the field and you would shoot from the perimeter using full telephoto. Hope that makes sense. :)

Nice web site glad i found it, i just got the nikon p100 and started playing with it, camera seems great but for some reason it now sounds like everytime i take a picture it takes 5 shots and image is blury, i reset to default settings but it is still doing this, keep in mind of have zero camera knowledge and will be visiting this site alot im sure, thanks

Francis,
Sounds like you have continuous mode enabled. Go inside the setup menu and enable the ‘Single’ shooting mode (page 86 of the Nikon P100 manual).

need help for the best setting while shooting my sons football games?
Howdy Sean,
Day/Afternoon Games – Enable shutter priority (S) and select a shutter speed of 1/1000. If it’s bright enough outside, select an ISO of 100 or 200. I would also enable continuous mode (either H or L). H will take a series of 6 images at 10 frames per second. L will take up to 200 images at a rate of 2.8 frames per second. You can read more about these modes on page 86 of the Nikon P100 manual.
Night Games – Enable shutter priority (S) and select a shutter speed of 1/500. I would also enable Auto High ISO which will automatically select an ISO up to 1600. To increase your chances of a sharp shot, I would use continuous H mode.
Best of luck!
- Moose
Sean,
On a side note, I saw your email address…I’m a big Chargers fan as well! Let’s hope for a Chiefs loss and a Chargers win so we can sneak into the playoffs! :)

I am a beginner and am wonding if it’s a good idea to get a tripod. If so what is a good one for the right price and what size would you recommend?
Trevor,
For the price, you can’t beat the Dolica 62 inch proline tripod. It comes equipped with a ball head allowing you to quickly position the P100 in many different angles. It can also get very close to the ground for macro subjects and is tall enough for group portraits. Build quality is top notch for a tripod this cheap. Best of luck!

I am wanting to take pictures of my granddaugher running the barrels at rodeos and playing basketball – I change to the sports mode but it always goes to the time out mode when I take a picture because it is shooting all those frames – isn’t there a way to take just one picture of high speed like basketball. I am quite new at this.
Kathy,
For whatever reason, Nikon chose to not include a normal “sports” mode with the P100. The sport continuous mode, as you mentioned, will rattle off a burst of images at a reduced image size.
Try enabling shutter priority mode (S) on the mode dial and select a shutter speed of 1/500. Make sure you have Auto ISO enabled. This setup is great for shooting fast action.

Am trying to use the backlit HDR scene mode…the manual has the basics. not sure if I am supposed to push and hold the button during the entire process…or just push/hold/release….or push and hold twice?
will post a shot if I get decent render.
Howdy Mark,
You should only have to fully press the shutter once. The P100 will take two photos at the same time and overlay them to get the HDR effect.

I’ve been wondering if there is any sort of adapter for the p100 so that you can use a polarized filter to get rid of the glare in my water shots, etc? Also I have a few creative ideas in mind for using a fish eye lens, but I’m not sure if that is a possibility with this camera. I can’t afford an expensive DSLR and I love the p100 otherwise. I’m just hoping to get as much out of it as possible! Any ideas?
Lauren,
At the moment there aren’t any third party adaptors available for the P100 to accept filters. I’m guessing that the adaptor would have to be manually adjusted back and forth due to the large zoom range of the lens element. If I find out any info regarding a third party adaptor, I’ll be sure to post it here.

I recently purchased a Nikon P100 and feel the photographic bug has bit. Since im still a novice at photography ive been utilizing all the standard settings but have already found a few issues that i need advice on. The first question i have is there P100 software available for an XP operating system? That which i accquired with the camera is only compatible with vista and W7.
Whats the best advice you can offer me with regards to custom settings? I need to adjust the reaction time of the shutter when taking a pic.
Any good books or sites available for this camera and its variable settings?
Your tips will be appreciatted.
Thanks
Brandon,
If you’re a true beginner, start with Google Picasa. It’s the easiest program for beginners to learn the basics of photo editing. As you become more skilled, you can then migrate to a program like Photoshop Elements which will give you a bit more control over the editing process.
As for setting up your P100 to shoot in many different types of situations, definitely get yourself a copy of the Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby. He gives you an easy to understand one paragraph tutorial showing you which settings to use in a specific type of shooting scenario. Happy shooting!

I a considering getting an additional battery and possibly charger. Should I stick with original Nikon products or the cheaper knock-offs available on-line.
Amanda,
Third party EN-EL5 batteries are a bit of a hit and miss. I’ve used them them in the past and haven’t had any issues. On the other hand, I’ve heard from a few people who have had nothing but problems with third party EN-EL5 batteries…mostly having to do with the life of the battery. It all depends on the seller and where they’re getting their shipment of knockoff batteries.

I have recently bought the Case Logic SLRC-205 Sling Camera bag and I find it to be very useful for carrying camera, tripod, and other small things when I go out hiking. Have you ever used a sling bag? Are there any downfalls?
Lauren,
I also own the Caselogic camera sling bag. I use it mostly when I’m hiking. What I like most about the bag is that you can twist it to your side and have quick access to your camera equipment. With a regular backpack, you have to take it off and set it on the ground in order to get what you need. The other thing I like is how it handles weight distribution. The bag feels very balanced and makes heavy items feel much lighter. Happy shooting!

How do I know when to charge the battery again?
Savvas,
The battery level indicator is in the top right corner of the LCD screen. If you can’t see it, hit the DISP button until you see the information overlay. Best of luck!
- Moose
Hello Moose,
If I hit the DISP button I can see a lot of other information, but can’t see the the battery level indicator.
Savvas,
If you have a fully charged battery, you won’t see the icon. As your battery begins to deplete, the battery level indicator will appear as long as you have the information overlay enabled.

I need to take shots of guitars that I sell for my online store, I have trouble getting the contrast right and the colours. The guitars end up looking quite harsh with little appeal. What sort of background should I use to show the outline of the guitar and offer contrast to the gloss finish? What lighting is best without going to the pro gear, what can I use that will give a good result without high cost? As the guitars are gloss finish reflections and light spots are often apparent, how to avoid/reduce them?
Andrew,
You’ll need to setup a makeshift softbox that’s large enough for your guitars. Go to an office supply store and grab a couple stand up poster boards. Then get yourself two or three floodlights with daylight bulbs. Arrange the poster boards in a “U” shape and drape a white bed sheet over them so that it drapes down to the floor. Position your floodlights so that they are either bouncing off your ceiling or off of one of the poster boards. Position your P100 on a tripod (I like this one) and enable aperture priority mode. Zoom in slightly to your guitar and select the lowest aperture f/number available. Turn off the built-in flash and enable the self timer so you can get your hands off the camera. Happy shooting!

On the auto setting a lot of my shots have a rounded spherical appearance. how do I get rid of that (it makes my cars look weird and does not do anything for faces)?
Andrew,
The auto setting doesn’t have anything to do with the “spherical” look to your photos. This distortion effect usually occurs when shooting at wide-angle (26mm). For portraits, try zooming to mid or full telephoto. This will help create a shallow depth of field to isolate your subject and get a nice blurred background. As for your cars, are they full size or models. If they’re full size, you can try zoomin gin just slightly and taking a few steps back. That should get rid of the wide-angle distortion. If you’re taking photos of model cars, you’ll want to shoot in macro mode. Happy shooting!
