Ok, so you just got your brand new Kodak EasyShare Z981 and you realized that you still need to get a memory card…but which one? SD? SDHC? MMC? In this post I’ll answer all your questions about the different types of memory cards for the Z981.
If you’d like to skip straight to my memory card recommendation for the Kodak Z981, click here.
Kodak EasyShare Z981 Memory Card Types
- SD Memory Cards
- SDHC Memory Cards
SD cards can hold up to 4GB worth of images and video.
SDHC cards can hold up to 32GB worth of images and video.
Image Capacity on the Kodak Z981
Now that you know the different types of memory cards that work with the Z981, I wanted to give you an idea of the image capacity depending on which card you choose.
- A 4GB SD card will give you approximately 462 photos using the Fine JPEG image quality setting.
- A 16GB SDHC card will give you approximately 1,850 images using the Fine JPEG image quality setting.
- A 32GB SDHC card will give you approximately 3,700 images using the Fine JPEG image quality setting.
HD Video Capacity on the Kodak Z981
In this list you’ll see me mention Class 6 a few times. In order to shoot HD video on the EasyShare Z981, you’ll need to use a memory card with a Class 6 rating or higher. The term Class 6 basically refers to the minimum write speed, which is 6 megabytes per second. Kodak specifically states that with anything less than a Class 6 memory card, you’ll experience issues with video recording and playback.
- A 4GB SDHC (Class 6) card will give you approximately 19 min of HD 1280×720 video.
- A 16GB SDHC (Class 6) card will give you approximately 76 min of HD 1280×720 video.
- A 32GB SDHC (Class 6) card will give you approximately 152 min of HD 1280×720 video.
The best memory card for the Kodak Z981 based on both price and performance is the Transcend 16GB SDHC class 6 memory card.
This card is great for everyday photos, while giving you the performance needed for recording HD video and capturing images in RAW format.
- It has a good amount of storage space allowing you to take 1,850 photos or 76 minutes of HD video using the highest quality settings on the Z981.
- It’s a Class 6 memory card which meets the requirement for shooting HD video on the Z981.

Make sure your computer can accept sdhc memory cards
If you’re at your computer, take a quick look at the memory card reader and see if it says SDHC anywhere. If it doesn’t, then your computer won’t be able to read SDHC memory cards using the SD slot. For those of you in this category, I recommend getting a memory card reader that can accept SDHC cards, like this one.
Happy Shooting!

I have had this camera for several years now and most everything pic I take looks pretty good. love the quality and usage of the camera.
Same issue as Sheryl and Jim…I have a Kodak z981. It has a new empty media card in it. When I go to use it the camera signals “Internal Memory Full” Y is it not just switching over to the media card? Thank You. Any suggestions?
This camera can handle class 10 cards. Tried and tested. :D
I have a Kodak Z981 Camera. Installed in the camera is a new SD HC card. The camera refuses to recognise the card and displays a “Internal memory is full” message. Is the camera defective?
Frustrated with Kodak in Saskatchewan.

settings > setup tab>image storage select auto.
I get pictures that show raw and do not print or go to facebook, etc. What causes this?
Hi…wondering about the battery life in the battery. I put fully charged re-charagble batteries in the camera and the camera was dead about a week later, after little use. Then I put in regular batteries and those were dead after a week and little use. What is the deal? Any help would be great.
kathy, i just received my z981 last tuesday and i have taken about 150 pics from the precharged batteries and i still haven’t recharged them once. unfortunately, your camera may need to be returned or you have been using a lot of flashes. if the camera is just sitting dormant for a week and it kills the batteries, RMA if you can.
I just recieved my Kodak Z981 & I cannot get it to take clear crisp pix of birds in flight- it was a cloudy day w’ partial sun,but the pix came out more glarey than clear. I also cnnot get it to take pix at a higher MP than 3MP, when I use the multi-pix selection. Thank You for your time & consideration(s) in this matter. I would appreciate any & all of your great advice.
i received my z981 last week and tried the multi-x8 function as well.
the 3mp per file is the largest size as per the manual.
i noticed that a lot of blurring occurs when i panned the camera from left to right and vice versa. if you require multi-x8 shots with action, as you described, its time to pony up for a tripod or at least a monopod. this also means you should invest in a ball head to make your camera level, even if your tri/mono pod feet are not level.
the glare you see in your pictures can come from a number of items, reflections, shutter speed, aperture, random artifacts (noise in your pictures).
hopefully you didnt purchase this camera on its image quality as kodak has always had the business model to be feature rich and censor poor (image censor) at a competitive price. this means that all else being equal, other brands will have clearer pixel capture and reproduction.
Hello, I just got a Kodak Z981 to take photos of Birds in flight- Eagles & Osprii, etc,& fish jumping out of the water. I am disappointed that the pix were all bleached out & that I cannot get it to record at a higher MP than 3MP when using the multi-photo selction-8pix per sec. The camera even flashed a black streak at the top of the screen during one of the multi-shot bursts. Does this happen often? Does anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate any and all good advice.
Thank You!
We just purchased the Kodak z981 today and the sales person told us I could take multiple pictures at once for example while my son is playing sports, but I cant seem to find this option. Does this camera have this capability?
Howdy Alicia,
You can enable burst mode by selecting the ‘Drive’ mode icon located on the top of the Z981 next to the shutter button (looks like a clock). Hope that helps!

On my Z981, there is what appears to be a landscape/portrait switch directly to the right of the on/off switch. I know it is probably me, but I can’t seem to find any reference to this in the users manual. What is its function?
Larry,
This switch enables the vertical grip that’s included with your Z981. Hope that helps! :)

Hello: I just purchased the Z981 and I can’t find my answer at Kodak.com. I am trying to use the focus Mode and the instructions state that Focus Mode varies by picture taking mode -but I can’t seem to find the correct picture taking mode to use the focus mode.
What am I doing wrong. Thanks for your assistance.
Linda,
Try rotating the mode dial to Program mode (P) and then press the Focus mode button (flower icon) for the different focusing modes…
- Normal
- Infinity
- Macro
- Super Macro
- Manual
Hope that helps!
