You can instantly download the official Kodak Z981 user’s guide by clicking here (this PDF manual is provided by Kodak).

If you’d rather download the manual from Kodak’s website, just go to the EasyShare Z981 support page located here: www.kodak.com

  1. Once you’ve reached the Z981 support page, locate the ‘Using Your Product‘ section.
  2. You will see two options: User Guide and Extended User Guide

Just Google “Adobe Reader” to find the latest version available on Adobe’s website.

I have the Z981 camera too,it’s a great camera, takes great pics, but I seen a comment in the other forum, about it making a clicking noise when sitting still, doesn’t bother me,until I take a video, and you can hear it in the back ground sound….pretty disappointing?? Wished I knew how to solve that?? Any ideas? Or just have to live with it??

This is an old thread, I noticed, but my fiance found a c981 in the woods hunting. I have it in a bucket of rice now, to see if I can dry it out and hopefully it will work for me :)

My question is how long do you think I should leave it in the rice? Any clue or experience with this?

The extended manual does not address how to put the camera into super macro adequately. I have found that the only modes that the “flower” button activates the macro is in one of the manual modes.
Then you can step through landscape, macro, super macro, and the manual focus feature. Hope this helps those people who would like to take extreme closeups of flowers.

The date stopped printing on my pictures automatically. Through trail and error I can add the date to each picture, but I would like to reset it so it shows up on each picture. How do I reset it, so it prints on my pictures? Thank you. Linda

Would like to have this manual sent to me. Can’t seem to download it. I can’t understand why a complete manual was not included with a $200. camera. Hard to drag a comjputer around to take pictures and get the instructions on line at the same time.

hi claudia, actually other companies are doing this as well, not just for cameras, many computer periphrials now just have a little slip with a website for an online manual, as most electronics are USB driven and self loaded anyway.

if you cannot download the pdf above, its time for a computer hardware (crammed full hard drive) or software ( either adobe or operating system) overhaul. downloading a file under 4 megs should take no more than 10 seconds with a high speed internet connection.

Like Claudia, I was unable to download the manual from the Kodak website. Thanks to your site I now have it! Not providing the manual with the camera is an example of sorry customer service and I hope not an omen of future poor service. Thanks Moose.

For some reason I cannot review my video. I have sound but no picture. Any ideas or suggestions as to what may be the problem? I am also unable to access the help menu on the camera. Defective camera maybe?

      Howdy Melissa,

Not sure why the video wouldn’t playback along with the sound. You might try giving Kodak support a call (1-800-235-6325).

How do you get the vertical exposure button (on the side of the camera) to work?

     Reply
    • Ray

On top of the camera you will see a camera horizontal and one vertical (to the right of the on/off) Slide the button to the right and that’s all you need to do.

This is great info and nicely written to help others on using the z981. So far, happy with the kodakz981. This cam sure offers much and good zoom ,, shoot very creative Doing wedding pics this Sat. with the z981 and old school canon ae1 with 100 ektra film. Let you know what I think, and how well the pics turned out. have good feeling they will and praying always helps. Do you have tips about wedding pictures?

     Reply
    • Moose

      Paul,

Thanks for the kind words! For wedding shots, you’ll want to shoot in aperture priority mode (A) and select the lowest aperture f/number available for portraits and a higher f/numbers (f/5.6+) for group shots. If at all possible, zoom into your subjects as much as you can to shorten the depth of field. This will help put your subject in sharp focus with the background slightly blurred. Best of luck this Sat!

I love my new camera, here is the problem, when I connect it to down load the photos to my easy share program I get a sign that says no camera detected, but it is and when the window comes up to select all or select and transfer there are no pictures in the boxes but I can review them on the camera.

      Bonnie,

Sounds like there’s a conflicting issue between your computer and camera. I would try connecting a memory card reader to an available USB port and insert your memory card into the reader. This will bypass any compatibly issues.

I’m new as well. I have a Z981 that I just got and I use the PASM Modes (right now I’m just using the P Mode as it seems to work better than the Smart Capture and the other scene modes) but I haven’t figure out how to take pictures at night or to do action photography at night. At this point, I would greatly appreciate some advice! I didn’t see anything here about action shots, night shots, or actions shots at night so I figured I’d ask!

    Thanks

    Hi,

I was wondering if you’d be able to help me by explaining how to use the macro, super macro and infinity modes on this camera. Does the dial have to be on a particular setting for these to work? As they don’t seem to work when I am on certain settings.

I hope this makes sense. Thank you so much in advance!

     Reply
    • Moose

      Stereo,

      • Macro – Subjects 4 to 40 inches (10-100cm) away from the front of the lens.
      • Super Macro – Subjects 0.5 to 12 inches (1-30cm) away from the front of the lens.
      • Infinity – Everything in the photograph, all the way to infinity, will be in focus.

For close-up photography, I would use Super Macro AF mode…unless you’re afraid of the subject you’re shooting…like a spider. :)

For landscape photography, I would use Infinity AF mode to get as much of the scene in focus.

Yes, you’re correct…the above mentioned focus options are available in P, S, A and M modes. When you’re using a creative mode, like ‘Portrait’ or ‘Sports’, the focus option you enabled will be overwritten by the current creative mode. Hope that makes sense!

By the way, I visited your blog…you’re an excellent writer! Keep up the great work!

Hey Moose what is Super Macro on the Kodak Z981?

     Reply
    • Moose

      Wayne,

Super Macro is meant for subjects that are 0.5 to 12 inches away from the front of the lens. Regular macro is meant for subjects that are 4 to 40 inches from the front of the lens. Happy shooting!

      Ariadna,

Put your Z981 into program mode (‘P’ on the mode dial). Then press the ‘Menu’ button and highlight the ‘Capture’ tab. Then select ‘Picture Quality’ and you’ll see an option for RAW. Best of luck! :)

  23. Allan

Hi, I am new to photography, and my friend has been saying about the macro. I know the kodak has a macro but how do I turn it on. Is it a switch on the dial I have to turn it to, or is there a setting in it some how. Probably it is a pretty stupid question but I am just not totally sure which one it is. Thanks, other than that its a great camera, really impressed by it!

    Thanks in advance.

      Allan,

You’ll see three circular buttons near the shutter release. Select the middle button with the flower icon. This will bring up the focus menu where you can select ‘Macro’ or ‘Super Macro’.
