Check this post for the latest Fuji HS10 firmware info.

Updated Dec 3, 2010: Latest firmware update available is Version 1.04. There have been three public firmware updates since the HS10 was launched. The latest version (v1.04) includes all the updates from the previous versions.

Issues corrected…

  • Custom white balance can be set correctly when an external flash is mounted
  • Slide show mode – sound of movie recording data can be performed on the HDTV which is connected with the camera via HDMI interface
  • Small details lack sharpness
  • Distorted images when in AE bracketing mode
  • JPEG images are sharper when in RAW+JPEG mode
  • Gradients from one color to another can appear not smooth when using the Dynamic Range enhancement feature
  • In Raw data a line is visible where colors slightly change when developed by Raw File Converter
  • Battery indicator turns on too early
  • Sometimes image corrupts when “Image Disp” in set-up menu is set to “Zoom”

Before I send you off to Fuji’s website for the firmware update, I want to make sure that you do the following before anything else…

  • Transfer all of your images and video to a computer. In order to do the firmware update, you are required to format your memory card. Formatting your card will erase everything.
  • Insert fresh alkaline batteries or fully charged batteries. Losing power during the firmware update may cause some further problems.

    Hi!
    Hi!
I did follow the instructions of the check firmwave on Fuji HS-10 but can not be. Why? Maybe not this machine is not installed software? Do not know the technical fault in part or in camera so I did not do the upgrade installation firmwave. Who knows please guide me. Many thanks.

Before doing software load, you must use SANDISK or FuJI image card (up to 30GB). I found this out the hard way. My PROMASTER card failed to transfer the file. After consulting FUJI tech support, I used a 9GB SANDISK SDHC card and the upgrade worked. Oddly enough, the PROMASTER card could store images ok, but would not function for the upgrade.

Just a FYI, my HS10 already had 1.04 on it and that was on 12-11-2010.

why are all these people asking if they need to “update” their new camera with a updated version? what does that mean? and do I need to do it? how and why would I? Forgive my ignorance, but I’m extremly new to photography and dont have a clue of any of this talk!!! I do plan on getting that book you recommend for beginners by scott kelby I think you said, then I wont have to bother you all so much !!! Thanks a bunch
    Wendy

    • Moose

      Howdy Wendy,

I’m glad to help, that’s what this site is all about! :)

The “update” is basically a “fix” supplied by Fujifilm that addresses problems or issues that have been reported to their customer service department.

In the list above, you’ll see all of the items that the firmware update addresses. To get instructions for installing the update, click here.

      Hope that clears everything up!

Hi Moose, do you know why it is that we, as consumers of the FujiFilm HS10 product, having taken the effort to register our product and provide FujiFilm with our relevant details, are we not emailed by FujiFilm informing us of that the latest Firmware is available for download?
I only knew about Ver. 1.04 from your excellent Blog page, thank you.

    • Moose

      Bryan,

I’ve got no idea…maybe Fuji wants you to visit my site for updates and info! ;)

I just received my HS10 today via UPS. I bought it over the phone from an outfit in New jersey that had good reviews for $379.00. I love it already.

Using the instructions above it showed firmware 1.03 already installed.

In several shooting modes ( auto, S,A,M,SP1,SP2 ) I was able to access the 2X digital zoom by pressing the up arrow on the 4 way selector button on the back right side. The viewfinder or EVS shows a gray frame cropping the image (press the up arrow repeatedly to cycle through horizontal, vertical, and off) but really you are getting double the zoom: 1440mm max! at full telephoto. This neat feature appears nowhere in the full pdf manual.

I’m a happy camper and expect to make many great photos with this gem of a camera.

    Cheers,
    Lee

      Lee,

Congrats on the new cam! Thanks for sharing the digital zoom tip…happy shooting!

Hi Moose. I just bought fuji HS10 here from Beijing, China. First of all i appreciate this website for delivering very useful info. My question regarding the update is that how do i know what is the current version of my HS10. Ive gone through the menus but couldnt find it.

    Shahzad

    • Moose

      Shahzad,

      Here are the steps…

      1. Insert a blank formatted memory card in the camera.
      2. Turn on your FinePix HS10 / HS11 while holding down the [DISP/BACK] button.
      3. The number displayed on the screen is the camera’s “CURRENT” firmware version.

    Hi Moose / All

    I’m new to this forum.
I’ve managed to download the firmware and update my camera to version 1.02 using the SDHC method. Having upgraded successfully do I now need to remove the FPUPDATE.DAT file from my SDHC card?

    • Moose

Yes, you can remove it from your memory card.

  10. Kipper

Can anyone confirm that there will be a third FW update for the HS10? There is buzz about it on some of the online forums.

    Thank you!

    • Moose

      Kipper,

I have heard a few rumors as well…we should see another firmware update shortly. My Fuji sources are very tight lipped. :)

Thank you so much Moose for responding. Much appreciated. :-)

Wow, Fuji customer service is really bad.

The first person almost immediately started disagreeing with me when I told him what I was seeing on my Mac when I downloaded the firmware onto my desktop. (Huh ?????)

The second person hung up on me the moment I finished giving my number “just in case we get disconnected”.

Is there a customer service number to call that is actually supported by anyone or are we stuck with these inconsiderate yahoo’s in Jersey?
(nothing against NJ, it’s just that that’s where they said they were located)

    • Norman

Jim, I was surprised to hear that you had an unsatisfactory experience with Fujifilm customer service. I had difficulty upgrading the firmware (I seem to be “computer impaired”) and the representative walked me through the entire process with great skill along with infinite patience. I also contacted them regarding a printed version of the operating manual and received a printed copy very quickly. Actually Jim, it is always a pleasure to speak with a customer service person located in NJ or any other part of the USA as opposed to some in other countries whom I find difficult to understand because customer service is outsourced by the manufacturer (I am hearing impaired and that may be part of the problem). Perhaps you encountered a representative that was having a bad day. Try them again when you need support and you may be pleasantly surprised. Love my HS10!

      Norman

    • Jim

Spoke with a rep named Patrick today. He was very helpful and patient.

But after 45 minutes trying via USB and a card reader, we still couldn’t get the update to work.

After we decided he’d have a specialist call me Tuesday, I decided to start from scratch on my own.
I made sure the copies I had downloaded were deleted.
I reset Safari and restarted my computer.
Then I started all over again downloading, transferring, etc etc and it worked perfectly.

No idea why we had such a hard time, but at least I am extremely familiar with the process now, so if another upgrade comes up I’ll be comfortable doing it on my own.

    • Moose

      Jim,

Glad to hear you got it sorted out!

      - Moose

    • Norman

Jim, good for you! if I had to do it on my own I would have to schedule a month to comlete. Happy to hear you had a better experience with Fujifilm customer service.

An HS10 purchased in the UK in July already had version 1.02 installed

      Pete,

      Thanks for the heads up!

  13. Jerry

Thanks for all the info. Just upgraded from 1.01 to 1.02, real easy, only had one mishap. I put the upgrade file in the fugi folder instead of the dcim. ( I should know what the “root” folder is by now) Camera could not find upgrade, moved the file to correct folder and upgrade loaded in seconds. Thanks, again!

    • Moose

      Jerry,

      Glad you figured it out!

  14. dave

how can you tell if your hs10 has had the latest firmware updates

    • Moose

      Dave,

Insert a blank formatted memory card in the camera. Turn on your HS10 while holding down the [DISP/BACK] button. The number displayed on the screen is the camera’s “CURRENT” firmware version.

Just received my HS 10 today. Has anyone else had issues with the EVF button. I press it and the EVF flashes and picture goes back to the screen on the back of the camera. Also when I point the lens toward the sky, the screen on the back flashes on and off.

    Any thoughts! Thank you.

    • Moose

      Cathy,

The quirky behavior you’re experiencing is the automatic EVF detection. Whenever the HS10 senses movement or an object in front of the EVF, it will turn off the LCD and display the image in the viewfinder. You can turn this option off inside the setup menu (EVF/LCD Auto Switch Option). Hope that helps!

WGLance and Moose, I called Fuji, and they sent me a “manual” at no charge. It was actually a printed out version of the PDF and was on copy paper. Works for me!

    Norman

    • Moose

      Norman,

Thanks for the info! It’s been a while since I ordered a manual from Fuji. It’s good to see they are no longer charging for replacement manuals.

      - Moose

  17. WGLance

    Moose,

OK, so I am only out about $10. If I cannot afford that much, I shouldn’t have bought a camera, right? I still think this info needs to be on the Manual Blog.

    Bill

    • Moose

      Bill,

Great idea…I’ll add it to the post of the Fuji HS10 manual info.

      - Moose

  18. WGLance

Too bad that your mention of the availability of a printed manual from Fujifilm did not appear on the ‘Manual Blog’. That would have saved me $22, instead of purchasing it from a publisher in Great Britain.

    • Moose

      WGLance,

Fuji charges a flat fee depending on your location. In the US, its around $10 plus shipping.

Hi Moose! and re: Tony Buckingham’s question, I just ordered a printed manual from Fuji at 1-800-659-3854, ext. 3451. The person who answered the phone was polite and right on it. She said they’d ship it to me right away! Happy shooting to all.

      Tailaowai,

Thanks for sharing! It’s good to hear that your experience with the Fuji rep was positive.

Hi Moose just one question Re firmware upgrade.
It says you must have finepix software installed to do the upgrade via usb. PC to HS10. It also says to turn the finepix software of when it starts up.
Has anyone done the upgrade without the finepix software installed example download firmware update and transfer program and hit the exe with the HS10 connected to Pc via usb. I hope this all makes sense.

Just purchased my HS10 (June 25) and it says it has firmware version 1.02 loaded. Is this the most up to date as Tony Buckingham found? It certainly ties in with the Fujifilm website.

    • Moose

      Colin,

You are correct…version 1.02 is the latest firmware for the HS10.

      - Moose

  22. Tony Buckingham

HS10 Firmware upgrade. Just bought HS10 and saw note about Upgrade on MyFuji website. I started to follow the download procedure then found that the Upgrade version was already loaded into the camera. I found this out when following the procedure to check firmware version by holding ‘Disp/Back’ button whilst switching on; all as stated in the notes. This has saved a lot of hassle!

Can you advise on a remote control device for the HS10? I find that fiddling with timer delay buttons is frustrating when you want to take several shots with aperture/time restrictions.

Also, is there any way to get a printed manual without having to go through the laborious process of trying to get double sided A5 prints of the 150 + pages. I now have the PDF file on a USB key but the chances of having a computer available when you have a need to consult the manual, are pretty low.

Thanks for your excellent advice on the HS10.

    Tony

    • Moose

      Tony,

Thanks for sharing! Unfortunately the HS10 is not compatible with any remotes. One of my photographer buddies tried coupling it with the Fujifilm RR-80 Remote Release, however, it did not work. Yes, you can get a printed manual straight from Fuji. Just give them a call (1-800-800-3854).

Moose, I like Window 7, and have it on my desktop computer in Florida. We are in our beach house in NJ (middle of May until end of October) and my laptop was getting cranky. It had Windows XP and that was okay. I have friends who have Vista and are not very happy with it. Although my laptop was only 5-6 years old, the equivelant would be to me playing professional baseball at age 77. Just doesn’t have it anymore.

    Norman

    • Moose

      Norman,

Good to know that you’re enjoying Windows 7. I liked the baseball comparison! :) Vista has been “ok” for me, but I’ll be upgrading sometime this year.

Moose, Fuji came through with flying colors! A tech named Jay walked me through the process and was very patient, even to a fault when I couldn’t find my transfer file download as I had “parked” it in a video file. In the meantime, my wife called from Paris to give me an update on her trip (our kids took her there for her birthday) and I was going back and forth on the telephone and poor Jay was really nice about it. My new computer OS is Windows 7 and there is a transfer file for that. Jay couldn’t stay on the horn any longer and said he would call me @3:30. I finally found the file and downloaded it successfully. I called Fuji and left word for Jay that I was okay and to thank him once more. I told the tech with whom I spoke about your support or rather; life-support website and he was very interested and asked for the web address which I provided. Moose, you are the best. Thanks.

    Norman

    • Moose

Great to hear Norman! Every time I’ve dealt with Fuji support they’ve been extremely helpful. How do you like Windows 7 so far? I’m still on Windows Vista. By the way, thanks for the website mention :)

      - Moose

  25. Norman

Moose, tried to download the new firmware but was greeted with an error message and instructed to call Fuji Tech Support. I formatted the memory card and used the card reader option, Had freshly charged batteries and “no cigar!” Camera then reported with a low battery message. This download must really use the juice. Called Fuji Tech Center and evidently this was a message that my Tech had not seen (she may have been new to the HS10). As this is scribed, I await her call, You must be weary of hearing from me, but you are my “vent.” I will keep you up-to-speed as this progresses.

    Norman

    • Moose

      Norman,

Sorry about that…keep us updated! I’d like to hear how Fuji support handled your issue.
