Sony a6000 Portrait Settings for Beginners

Learn how to setup the Sony a6000 for portraits.

In this tutorial, I show you my favorite in-camera settings for quick candid portraits on the Sony a6000. These settings will encourage background blur to give you that three dimensional look.

Recommended Portrait Lenses for the Sony a6000:

For indoor portraits where you need a wider field of view, go with the 35mm f/1.8 OSS . For outdoor portraits where you have more room to compose the subject, go with the 50mm f/1.8 OSS.

Recommended Portrait Settings:

  1. Aperture Priority Mode (A)
  2. Lowest available f/number
  3. ISO set to Auto
  4. Metering set to Multi
  5. White Balance set to Auto for outdoor daytime, otherwise select the WB preset based on the light you are under
  6. Focus mode set to AF-C
  7. Focus area set to Wide
  8. Enable Smile/Face Detect by going into the menu, tab #1, page #5
