How to Blur the Background

Wondering how to blur the background in a photo? In this quick video, I’ll show you the key ingredients for getting silky smooth blur behind your subject, otherwise known as “bokeh.”

For your notes, here are the steps…

  1. Zoom in or use a longer focal length (between 50mm and 200mm)
  2. Get close to the subject and make sure the background isn’t directly behind them
  3. Use the lowest possible aperture f-number for your lens (the lower the aperture f-number, the smoother the blur will appear)

If you don’t already have a prime lens with a low aperture f-number, I created a video comparing it to the kit lens here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF-QD…
